Harold Treme

I reported on board the LST 1148 on February 5, 1954.  We sailed for WESTPAC in March 1954, arriving in Yokosuka on April 25, 1954.  Shortly thereafter, we departed for French Indochina (now Viet Nam) where we evacuated refugees and French Foreign Legion Troops from the Haiphong area to Tourane.  I was the French interpreter for this mission.  Art Antisdel, QM1, took the picture below of a French pilot and myself.

We returned to Japan in October 1954, and to San Diego in November 1954.  I departed the 1148 in early 1955 and, for medical reasons, had to go to the hospital.  After I was released from the hospital, I returned to duty on the USS Montrose APA 212.  I made QM2 on the Montrose while serving with Dale Henson.  I served with Robert (Bobby) Arnold, BM3, in Adak, Alaska, and also on the 1148.

My son and I attended the reunion in San Diego in 2001.
